50 Book Challenge post:

Hi! I'm a new to livejournal, and this community. I'm an avid reader, and this seems like a great way to track what I'm reading. I read a lot, but lately the majority of my reading has been chick-lit and generic predicta-plot romance novels. So my personal goal for this year is to try to read 50 books that involve a little more thought. A few times this year I've checked books out of the library, only to realize halfway through that I'd already read them! I still love the chick-lit books, but I'm looking forward to some new things. I've been reading through the entries here, and I already have quite a list of books I'd like to read.

Since it's already April, I can't remember all the books I've read this year, so here are the ones I know for sure....(possible spoilers, but mostly just brief thoughts)

(1) The Shop on Blossom Street and (2) A Good Yarn, both by Debbie Macomber. I really enjoyed these - I love books in series; there's nothing better than really getting into the lives of the characters and really feeling like you know them.

(3) Smashed: Story of A Drunken Girlhood by Koren Zailckas. I'd recommend this book to anyone, but especially to high school aged girls. Zailckas doesn't sugarcoat her experiences with alcohol, yet she made a very heavy subject personal in a way that I think will get through to a lot of people.

(4) Leota's Garden by Francine Rivers. A Christian/inspirational fiction novel about a college girl that reconnects with her long estranged grandmother and repairs her relationship with her mother on the way. I love relational/emotional reads, and this tugged at my heart.

(5) The Scarlet Thread, also by Francine Rivers. A woman in the midst of separating from her husband finds the journal of one of her ancestors. The book jumps between the past and the present, which made it a little difficult for me to keep up. Overall though, I really enjoy Rivers' books.

(6) The Myth of You and Me by Leah Stewart. My roomate read this for her book club and then passed it on to me. It took me a while to get into it, as it was told mostly in flashback - but I enjoyed getting a sense of the characters as young girls and then again as teenagers to adults.

(7) Say When by Elizabeth Berg. I just finished this today. It's told in the male POV, a husband whose wife has decided she wants a divorce. Since a lot of books I read are told from the female perspective (and since I relate well to other women) this was a different experience for me. I liked getting into a man's head, and "hearing" the thought process. I didn't feel quite as drawn in to the story as I have in other of Berg's books (Until the Real Thing Comes Along)but it was still an enjoyable read.

I haven't picked out my next book yet, but I spent my morning at a huge used book sale so I've got a pile to choose from tonight!
